Xingu Hill – Unreleased Material (1995-1997)

Xingu Hill is the solo project of John Sellekaers, who has released records over a 10 year span for labels such as Nova Zembla, Ant-Zen, Hymen, and Hush Hush. He also has a number of active projects and collaborations with other artists (including the excellent Black Lung collaboration, The Andronechron Incident) and, since 1998, has run the Metarc mastering studio, based in Montreal. Metarc has been responsible for the mastering of a good deal of releases by groups such as Prometheus Burning, Antigen Shift, Somatic Responses, Imminent, and many others. As the title implies, this album is a compilation of unreleased material from 1995 – 1997, including an untitled ambient suite composed in 1996. He states that these are archive recordings that were not originally meant to be made available, but have now been made available through a Creative Commons license on archive.org.

    dark ambient / experimental mix

This is a new mix I recorded this week, which won’t be on SoundCloud, since I only have a free account. While some of the nice features of SoundCloud will be missed, I would still be able to host it here for streaming and download. This one is longer and a little bit rougher than the first one that I made (link). It includes a selection of old and new materials from a variety of commercially-released albums, as well as a few recent netlabel releases. This set turned out a lot darker than I was originally going to intend for it to be. This is due to the addition of several experimental artists like Controlled Bleeding, CTI, Psychophysicist, and Elph (Coil), as well as a few groups that are more associated with the industrial crowd, like Kibuka, Visions of Excess, and Portion Control. There could have been a lot more tracks I would have liked to include, but the mix did not need to be 5 hours long. Once again, this was recorded in one take and I cleaned a few things up in Audacity, however, most of the mistakes are still intact.

    Space – Space
Filed under: ambient — iceolate @ 2:27 am

Space, as it is simply called, is a 38 minute piece released independently on KLF Communications by Jimmy Cauty. The piece is split up into 8 parts named after the planets of the solar system, minus the Earth. Approximate track timings are listed on Wikipedia, but the sleeve does not specify these. Also, according to Wikipedia, this was actually intended to be the debut Orb album, but Cauty removed Alex Paterson’s contributions and re-worked the material. Official copies of this album tend to fetch higher prices on Discogs and such, but if one does not mind the somewhat-illegality of acquiring an obscure 20 year old bootleg, it can be found starting much cheaper. Musicially, the album is not particularly ground-breaking, but nevertheless an excellent companion piece to the far more successful album Chill Out, which was also released the same year.

This is a mix I made, my first one actually, in late February, using some new software I purchased called Torq Mixlab, made by M-Audio. It’s an excellent and inexpensive setup to learn to use and have fun.

I compiled the tracklist at random in about 20 minutes. I was getting ready for a root canal and wanted to listen to some ambient music to sooth myself. I picked a handful of tracks that I wanted to listen to and hit record. There’s a few glitches, such as hitting the pause button on the wrong deck, and picking a song that was too short which ran out and left a several second gap of silence until the next track. Overall, I enjoyed it.

I’m pretty unimaginative when it comes to picking titles and so forth, so since this was my first test on the Mixlab, I called it Ambient_Test1. A free account for SoundCloud allows for 2 hours of uploaded material, so I made this one an hour even. Eventually, I’d like to take some ideas I had from this and expand it into a full, proper mix. Maybe I’ll think of a cool title by then.

The tracklisting for this can be found on the Soudcloud page.

    dreamSTATE – A Decade Dreaming
Filed under: ambient — iceolate @ 3:17 am

alt=A Decade Dreaming is the newest release from Toronto-based ambient duo, dreamSTATE, and also the first since 2005′s Passage. dreamSTATE has made this available as a free-download in honor of the 10th Anniversary of The Ambient Ping, a long-running fixture in the Toronto ambient scene and features a selection of dreamSTATE performances from over the years. Starting with the most recent track “Premonition”, recorded on August 18, 2009, A Decade Dreaming spans 12 tracks back to at least 2001. While I do not have any information on the final 3 tracks of the album, they did put together a “liner notes” page that is updated on a regular basis with track information as well as exclusive pictures. Recommended for all fans of ambient music, this release presents a wonderful historical record and would come highly recommended even if it wasn’t free.

Mick Chillage – Tales From The Igloo

Mick Chillage, best known as one-half of The Chillage Idiots (with his cohort Paul Chillage) steps up with his debut full-length album after a long series of digital EPs for Nice & Nasty Records in 2009. Tales From The Igloo was released in July 2009 by a Dublin, Ireland-based ambient / electronic label known as Psychonavigation Records. Recorded between 2005 and 2008, the 12 tracks that Tales From The Igloo consists of clocks in at about 76 minutes and is a high class mixture of downtempo / IDM, from the calm opener “The Hidden Landscape” all the way through to the album’s closer, an upbeat remix by Pentatonik. The classy artwork was done by an Dutch artist named Jeroen Advocaat, best known to me as doing artwork for the Sending Orbs label. In addition to this, Mick has returned to Nice & Nasty with an EP called The Final Storm remixes. The Chillage Idiots took some time off while Mick prepared for the release of this album, but have recently posted a new show on XfmDublin.com, dedicated to the memories of Ian Loveday (Eon) and Andy Hughes (The Orb). Mick also keeps himself busy with a variety of remixes for other artists. Consistently, every track I’ve listen to by him has been great stuff, and Tales From the Igloo is no exception. Well worth the wait.

Offworld Communication Systems / Offworld SE5
    Filed under: ambient,downtempo,idm — iceolate @ 10:55 pm

Christian Groothuizen began his musical career in 1986 as the bassist of British indie rock band The House of Love, and remained a member until the band’s split in 1993. Following this, he created Offworld Communication Systems, an obscure label to distribute his solo ambient projects.

The first release was Offcomm 1, under the artist name Offworld Communications Systems. This would be the only release where the artist and his label shared the same name. Offcomm 1 was released in 1995, and re-released one year later on a British label called Creation Records, which had entered into a distribution partnership with Sony in the 90s. This reissue, called Another Planet, has different track timings and listing, but I am unsure whether the music is actually different.

In 1998, the 12″ Angel was released, containing the title-track along with several remixes. This was followed by another full-length album entitled A New Life Awaits You. I like to think that the title of the album was inspired by a line from the movie Blade Runner, but I have no idea: “A new life awaits you in the Off-World colonies.” For the 12″ and the album, the artist name became Offworld SE5.

In 2001, The House of Love did reform, but without the participation of Groothuizen. He is now a member of the Royal Institute of British Architects. For people are interested in that sort of thing, there are several pictures of his various projects available on his website. I don’t know if he still makes music as a hobby, but I would imagine he would not have the time for a full-time band once again.

Both of these albums are classic examples of mid-to-late 90s ambient techno and IDM, which certainly do not deserve to continue to exist in obscurity. Used copies turn up for sale sometimes on Discogs and Amazon, so it’s worth a look to check them out.

    dreamSTATE – Moz – Cloud Painting #8

Moz – Cloud Painting #8 is the first concept DVD by Canadian ambient duo dreamSTATE. It is a 12-minute ambient film by Scott M2, set to the track “For The Dreaming Dancers”, which may or may not be a different version than what is found on the release Om, which is currently out of stock. The DVD offers the ability to listen to the soundtrack in 24 bit stereo or 4.0 Dolby AC3 immersive mix with infinite loop option, which is nice for people that do have surround sound. Myself, I only have my television, so the stereo version was the way to go for me. The visuals are intended to be viewed as a “video painting” using clouds as a medium of slow transformation and what appears to be some sort of Eskimo moose god. I didn’t try the infinite loop option, but just on its own after one viewing, it’s a very interesting piece. It is relaxing to watch how the clouds morph in the background to the slow drift of the music. There are a few things that I would prefer that would make it better, such as a full-length audio mix and some more variety in the visuals, however, as Scott M2 seems to have an interest in developing more ambient video in the future, I am quite sure that the results will only get better with time. The DVD is available for the price of 4.95 plus shipping and a much larger view of the cover can be viewed at the link below, which is a screenshot from the video.

    FFWD – Orbert
Filed under: ambient — iceolate @ 8:43 pm

FFWD was an ambient project from the early nineties that consisted of Dr. Alex Paterson, Robert Fripp (King Crimson), Kris Weston, and Thomas Fehlmann. Orbert is a demo version of the FFWD album, which was released in 1993. The demo consists of one 50 minute mixed track, while the album, which was released on Paterson’s own Inter-Modo label in 1994. FFWD was the only album the lineup produced, and after this, The Orb moved on and continued to release more material. Kris Weston, aka Thrash, was a live and studio member of the Orb from 1990 to 1994, as well as doing remix work. Fehlmann maintained a career of his own, aside from his contributions as a part-time member of The Orb, as well as being a resident at Tresor Berlin in the 1990s. I wish I had more to write about the album, but I really don’t. It’s a rare and early pure, beatless ambient work, and this release will please fans of early Orb works. This is a large file, so it might take the embedded audio player a few minutes to buffer.

Trancemission – The Voyage of the Whales (a.k.a. Leviathan)

Talk about a really difficult album to find! I was originally interested in the music of this artist due to the inclusion of the track “Slavedance” on the first Dream Injection compilation. I believe that originally, Leviathan released a self-titled album on Pyramyd Records in 1994 that was licensed to another label called Music & Sound. I am assuming that for some odd reason, someone then decided to use the rather cheesy name “Trancemission – The Voyage of the Whales”. However, it is still the same music, so this is just a rather minor point. It is rather difficult to confirm this information because there is none that I can find on the Internet. Also, the artist seems to share the same name as a popular American actor, which renders a Google search useless. Non-American readers, don’t worry about it. You’re not missing anything, trust me.

I really had just about given up hope on finding the damn CD, but my persistence finally paid off. I thought I had at least found it on some generic mp3 portal site, but that was a lot of crap. Instead, I got a membership to 3 different porn sites. Believe me, I don’t need to pay for porn if I don’t want to. Which is to say that I know where to download it for free, if i need to. Anyway, the porn is irrelevant. After that, I thought I actually did find the CD from an Amazon seller in the UK, but it turns out that this woman did not bother to check herself and instead sent me a really fucking cheesy new age CD also called The Voyage of the Whales, which is comprised of the sounds of whale songs and flutes. Lame. Naturally, the website that distributes the CD, Global Journey, is frustrating me and I can’t find that CD. I don’t know why I’m EVEN promoting them by providing a link, but it’s just to demonstrate how, to use an earlier phrase, “really fucking cheesy” it is.

Now, yes, this album does include the sounds of whale songs. It is true. But they are incorporated tastefully into the mix and server to compliment the music, rather than be the focal point. Three of the tracks clock in at about 13 minutes each, representing more than half of the whole album’s total length. There are several more uptempo tracks as well, including my favorite, “Paralyzed”. There’s not much else I can really write about this CD. I think I am just rambling to over-compensate for the lack of information (and lack of sleep). Fans of well-produced mid-90s ambient techno will definitely enjoy it.

    Irezumi – Endurance
Filed under: ambient — iceolate @ 4:44 am

Endurance is the debut release by the French ambient artist Irezumi. Released in early 2008, it is coincidentally also the first release for a deep ambient label based in Paris called Snowblood. In addition to this, Irezumi has recorded several EPs of deep house (Discogs only lists two, at the moment) under his real name Manuel M, which can be found at Beatport.

Endurance is inspired by the tale of Sir Ernest Henry Shackleton, an Irish explorer who died tragically on his final expedition to the Antarctic. The full story about Shackelton can be read on Wikipedia. On the album, Irezumi crafts a deep and moving soundscape that reminds of a less-minimal Biosphere and would fit perfectly well among many other titles on the famed German FAX label. The music is wholly instrumental, except for some spoken snippets on “Untitled 4″, which can be quite startling if you are listening to it on headphones while laying down, because it’s much louder in the mix than expected. The first time I listened to it, I was pretty relaxed and it sort of threw off my mood. Once I recovered, however, it was smooth sailing after that.

Irezumi was supposed to contribute a remix to the new Kibuka album, Dystopia, and would have joined the ranks of the Lustmord and Paul Browse remixes. However, this did not get to happen and hopefully the remix will get released at some point, maybe on a follow-up Kibuka EP or something. Hard to say.

Audio samples from the album as well as a few non-album tracks are available for preview from his Myspace page, as well as a link to order a copy of the CD, which is limited to 1000 copies.

Recently, Manuel had been plagued by unrestrained file-sharing of his CD on various networks and has decided to step away from his ambient music production for the time being. It is his intention to clear his head and concentrate on his electronic dance music, which has always been his main focus in the first place.

A talented young producer in the house / techno and ambient realms, we will be seeing more of Manuel’s productions in the future. Visit him on Myspace and help support him.

    Mick Chillage – Departure EP

Mick Chillage returns with his third EP release, Departure, released for Nice & Nasty Records (a Dublin, Ireland-based techno label). Eagle-eyed readers will remember that I made a mention of Mick’s previous EP release, Eye On The City. Departure was released in January 2009, and contains four more tracks of laid-back chillage music that is sure to not disappoint. Departure is available from a variety of download platforms, including beatdigital.com, Beatport, and junodownload.com in 192 mp3, 320 mp3 and WAV files. Mick is also having a series of other artists do remixes, of which one will be released each month. All of this is gearing up to the release of Mr. Chillage’s debut full-length album Tales From The Igloo, due to be released sometime this summer by Psychonavigation Records. Definitely something cool to look forward to for good summer listening. Mick recently did an hour-long mix of forthcoming material and it can be found here. It’s rather difficult to find, and I hope a download is made available soon. You need to click the 2player button at the top of the page, and in the pop-up, find “110109 Psychonavigation pres. Mick Chillage” (number 25 in the list at the time of this writing). Lots of good stuff coming up from Mick in the next couple of months, so be sure to check out his Myspace page for more information and songs to listen to.

    Kibuka – Dystopia

Kibuka is the new project of long-time Clock DVA / T.A.G.C. member Dean Dennis, released in 2009. The album is being distributed by himself through Myspace.

Dennis started his career in his teenage years as a member of the first incarnation of legendary British act Clock DVA. Following DVA’s break-up in the mid-80s, Dennis went on to collaborate again with DVA frontman Adi Newton on his T.A.G.C. project. In 1988, Clock DVA resumed activities again with a much harder-edged electronic sound for the album Buried Dreams, on which Dennis and Newton were again joined by Paul A. Browse.

Browse left the group after Buried Dreams and was replaced by Robert Baker. Dennis departed Clock DVA after working on the stellar albums Digital Soundtracks and Man-Amplified in 1992. After DVA’s final break-up in 1994, Dennis embarked on his first solo journey with the project Sector. He released two albums for Atmosphere in the mid-90s, and then took a long hiatus before returning to the project in 2002 with the release The Yellow Room.

In 2006, Dennis released the album Metropolis for his new project, called Nohno. Which brings us up to the present day in February 2009. Kibuka is Dennis’ new electronic project, and on it, he is joined by his friend Snook, who also did the excellent artwork for the beautiful digipak. Containing 16 tracks, Dystopia is a more beat-driven than Nohno, and is a dark, atmospheric fusion of electro and IDM with razor-sharp basslines and clean programming. It’s described as the soundtrack for conspiracy theorists and paranoiacs.

The album is capped by two “bonus” tracks, both of which are nearly twice as long as any other track on the album. The first is the extended Lustmord dark and dubby remix of “All Seeing Eye”, at over 10 minutes in length. It is somewhat atypical of the material Lustmord usually produces, but it is a pretty awesome one.

The second, and the album’s closer, is a deep ambient treatment of “Chimera” by Spiralized and Paul A. Browse. This remix marks the first collaboration between Dennis and Browse since Buried Dreams was released. Another remix was supposed to be included, done by French artist Irezumi, but did not make the cut due to time constraints. Otherwise, a fine end to an excellent album.

Dean Dennis has always kept up a high quality of work and Dystopia continues that trend with what may be his best album to date. Truly, a fine album to relax and listen to and is highly recommended for all fans of underground electronic music.

The Future Sound of London – Radio 1 FSOL Essential Mix 1
    Filed under: ambient,downtempo,electronic — iceolate @ 12:01 am

“This transmission coming up just may rekindle your will to live.” This originally popped up years ago on an anonymous FTP called fsol.disenchanted.com, along with many other live radio transmissions. The site ceased to exist and I was lucky to manage to keep a copy of the download I had. However, FSOL has instituted a sub-page for fsoldigital.com, called The Pod Room, which contains various live radio transmissions, podcasts and mixes. Thus, I have removed the previous download link I had in place here. This is the first of 2 mixes for BBC Radio 1 and Pete Tong’s Essential Mix; this one in 1993, the second in 1995. While the mix isn’t ultra-heavy on FSOL material for its 2-hour length, what makes this mix noteworthy is it contains many snippets titled Amorphous Androgynous “Environments”. Environments was referenced in the liner notes to the album Lifeforms as being the next Amorphous Androgynous release, after Tales of Ephidrina. It was never released, and after FSOL returned from an extended hiatus, they appropriated the Amorphous Androgynous name for their psychedelic rock-styled releases. Environments, and its companion, Enviroments II were made available in 2008, but I am unclear on how the material has been re-worked. Among other artists featured on this sprawling mix include Aphex Twin, Vapourspace, Tangerine Dream, Dr. Atmo, and more. There is absolutely no way for me to be sure what the actual tracklisting is, but I have made an attempt based on the information I had from the original download from the FTP site. With or without an accurate tracklisting, this is still a stellar mix that takes you on a great voyage and thanks to FSOL for making it properly available again.
